Additional Details

Imagine 630 people packed into the hold of even the largest steamships of this time. This must have produced horrendous conditions over the 175 day journey from China. As a result, many of these trips were plagued by uprisings. In July of 1857 one of them, the Kate Hooper, saw the death of its captain, and some of its crew during several mutinies by its cargo- 652 Chinese laborers who thought they were going to San Francisco, not Cuba; they even set the ship on fire. The journey ended with much of the ship's crew in a Havana jail.
